ABOUT

Bay Area Bike to Work Day and Bike to Wherever Days

Bay Area Bike to Work Day (BTWD) started over 30 years ago in 1994 to celebrate biking as a fun, healthy commute option—and to inspire non-cyclists to give it a try. It was also a chance to advocate for better bike infrastructure and safety across the region.

As fewer people biked to work during the pandemic, the event expanded into Bike to Wherever Day, and eventually to Bike to Wherever Days throughout May, encouraging everyone to use their bike for more than just commuting. Today, the month-long celebration reflects the hybrid nature of work and life, inviting you to bike for errands, visits, recreation, or your daily commute. Take the pledge, join the Bay Area Bike Challenge, and commit to riding more this May!

When are Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days 2026?

The entire month of May is Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days, while Bike to Work/Wherever Day 2026 will be Thursday, May 14th! National Bike to Work Day is on Friday, May 15th: because so few people work in the office on Fridays in the Bay Area, we celebrate on Thursday. On Bay Area Bike to Work/Wherever Day 2025, over 16,000 people stopped by 330 Energizer Stations to pick up a commemorative bag and join the fun. Maybe you will be one of them this year!

Why Bike to Wherever?

Over a million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplace—perfect for biking. With fewer people commuting to offices, we’re encouraging folks to bike for shopping, errands, and more—a simple way to get outside, breathe fresh air, and stay active. In a world grappling with climate change, pollution, and congestion, the real question is: “Why not bike?”

How do I participate?

We’re so glad you asked! There are so many ways to plug in, whether it’s in your home community or Bay Area-wide.

Pledge to Ride

Pledge to get out of your car for even just a few days during May, and then make a long-term commitment to use your bike whenever you can.
