About Bike to Work—now Wherever!—Day
A different model of Bike to Work Day during a pandemic
In a normal year, Bike to Work Day (BTWD) is a celebration of bicycles as a fun and healthy way to get to work, as well as an opportunity for those who don’t usually bike commute to try it out! It’s also a time to advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure and safety. Bike Month and BTWD are observed around the country on different days, and Bay Area counties share the same BTWD during Bike Month in May.
Because of COVID-19, however, back in April we decided to move Bike to Work Day 2020 to September 24 in the hopes that by then the Bay Area would have returned to some sense of normalcy. Obviously that has not happened, and as a result, we're calling BTWD "Bike to Wherever Day" and encouraging everyone to get out on bikes -- safely and following guidelines -- not only one one specific day but for the whole month of September.
When is Bike to Wherever Day?
Thursday, Sept 24, 2020 in the official day, but we are also encouraging everyone to participate for the entire month of September -- make it "Bike to Wherever Days!"
Why Bike to Wherever?
More than one million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplaces, an ideal distance for bicycling. In these unusual times when so few people are going into their offices, we are encouraging people to bike to shop, for errands, etc. -- a great way to get out of the house, get fresh air and exercise. In a world concerned with climate change, pollution, and congestion, the question should really be "Why not ride your bike?"
How do I participate in Bike to Wherever Day/Days?
Just get on your bike and ride! Want to keep track of your miles, trips, etc., and possibly win some prizes? Last year, this site was used for our team competition—Bay Area Bike Challenge. While you'll still be able to compete this year, we're encouraging everyone -- anyone who can pedal during September, to register and join us for a month-long celebration of cycling! Be sure to sign up here.
